In all definitions poverty and the economy serve as the basis for social exclusion. You need to have money to participate in society. We look to the economy because it is easily measurable: but there are more socially-based definitions. They focus on the ways in which people are made to feel as if they do not belong. They have barriers put between them and full societal participation: multidimensional definitions attempt to measure different processes that lead to exclusion. How everyday life plays a role in feelings of inclusion/exclusion: ostracism shunning. Pushing away groups that represent a threat to other aspects of social life. Ex: prison kept at distance, not fully integrated in society. Other forms include racial prejudice, xenophobia (fear of people from other countries), slut shaming: stigmatism attaching stigmas to people that become internalized. Who is a valued member of society and who is not: solidarism individuals all have the equal/free ability to engage in social relations.
