It is dif cult to determine the degree of poverty in canada because there is no agreed-upon or of cial de nition. Whether de nition should be in absolute or relative terms. Whether poverty should be de ned on the basis of income or consumption. When sociologists focus on the causes of inequality, the most often focus on institutionalized, established, and pervasive forms of inequality. The study of social inequality is concerned with individuals as well as groups, which includes personal position as well as organizational arrangements. Social strati cation: refers to the way in which society is organized in layers or strata. When it comes to inequality, most sociologists focus on what kinds of work the person is able to obtain. Capital can be derived from and in re ected in carious types of social relationships. If we were only to focus on economics, we would overlook the immaterial or non-economic forms of capital that impact social life.
