Ibn al-muqaffa": a muslim persian whose ancestors were working in the iranian empire. He tried to deduce who would be the caliph, his position (is he the replacement of the prophet- is he at the same level- no to both questions) Prophet muhammed was considered a prophet (spiritual leader) and sheikh. Certain aristocratic families whose families were special (ancestors with diplomatic stance) were sheikhs: a caliph should be a legal political ruler of spirituality, spiritual leaders were in the hands of the ulama. A parliament of scholars seated in baghdad that knew the quran inside out- textual scholars. These were the guardians of islamic spirit. They were dealing with questions such as: is the quran eternal or was it made to be followed through during the days of the prophet. Ulama had the right to forbid the caliph of a decision and claim it their own to make.
