Document Summary

3130 lecture week 4 language and thought. Differences between adult and children should be able to dialogue internally. Sometimes: formal reasoning, internal dialog, system 1 vs system 2, system 1 fast thinking so not always thinking in lanauge ( ie emotional cognition) Not always: rapid decisions, emotional cognition. Subjects shown car accident ( not horrifc normal accident) Everyone saw the same video, right after the video they were asked how far the cars were going when they collided, smashed and bumped into each other ( each group asked with different words) Everyone saw the same video, asked same question but different verbs. Then asked them to estimate the speed. The lanauge seemed to influence the memory or internal model of the accident. Influential, strong form of hypothsis has little support: the idea that the lanague you speak ( native lanauge) influences your memory, much more about how you perceive and comprehend the world.
