Criteria: evaluative standards that can be used for making judgments of effectiveness: e. g. job performance, attendance, stability, adaptability, innovation, responsibility, used in appraising employee performance, training program evaluation, selection validation. What makes good criteria: bernardin and beatty (1984): >25 characteristics for measuring the effectiveness of criteria. We will discuss five of these characteristics: relevance: degree to which the actual criterion is related to the ultimate criterion i. e. we measure what we want to measure. Deficiency: failure to measure what was intended. Problem: identifying the standards, measuring against the standards, applying the standards effectively and fairly. Attempts to address the criterion problems have led to some important distinctions: September 29th/october 6th & 13th: the problem: deciding what to measure, the solution: by thorndike in 1949. Ultimate criterion: theorical construct emcompassing all performance standards constituting success on a job. Actual criterion: measure intended to reflect the ultimate criteria as accurately as possible. Aka operational: example: criteria for student performance.
