Early 20th century: application of psychological principles in business and industry. Walter dill scott (1908) wrote the psychology of advertising . Hugo munsterberg (1913) wrote the psychology of industrial. Defined as the scientific study of the workplace: applied to issues of critical relevance to business. E. g. talent management, coaching, assessment, selection, training, organizational development, performance, and work- life balance. For organizations: employees can be a major source of competitive advantage. For employees: 1/3 or more of life between 25-60 will be spent at work, unemployment, underemployment, job insecurity, and problems at work are major sources of stress, work can be a major source of fulfillment. Us national reseach council poll determined 70% of people would continue to work even if they had enough money to live. Pay is important, but there is intrinsic motivation. Many i/o psychologists work at universities, consulting firms or private companies. Major goals of i/o psychology (1) improve organizational effectiveness (2) improve quality of work life.
