What is an emotion: emotion: subjective reaction to experience associated with physiological and behavioural changes, 3 aspects of emotion experience. E. g. , hr, blood flow, sweating, gastro-intestinal motility. Brain activation: hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (hpa) axis (neuroendocrine system) for stress; cortisol production. Behavioural/expressive response (e. g. , facial expression; scream; run away) Aside from extreme examples, how important are emotions in everyday life: going to class v. not going to class (feel anxious/stressed) First smiles reflexive; not in response to external stims. 2 months: first smiles to external objects. Global positive and negative affect; baby is either happy or upset, but gradual emergence of negative emotions. 6 months: joy, surprise, anger, fear, sad, disgust; these 6 emotions are culturally universal. Further development of disgust: expression of complex emotions. Guilt, shame; difference: guilt is doing something knowing you shouldn"t have done & feeling afterward; shame: a general feeling of worthlessness; bad behaviour versus bad person.
