Real expertise must pass 3 tests: must lead to performance that is consistently superior to that of the expert"s peers, produces concrete results. Chess player wins matches: can be replicated &measured in the lab. Experts are not just smart: experts know about a particular domain, at least 10 years of study/practice in their area of expertise. Just because you spent (cid:883)(cid:882) years doing something, doesn"t mean you"re an expert on that. Everyone starts out on the same route to becoming an expert, but not everyone makes it there: become (cid:498)arrested development(cid:499) Haven"t practiced enough to be an expert. These are often automatic: skills begin to deteriorate if you do not continue to try and improve, reading, writing, running when you aren"t actively trying to improve your skills. Examples given by malcolm gladwell: bill gates. Had access to coding as a teen due to his progressive high school. Many teens didn"t have this opportunity: the beatles.
