Word order is not enough to go from surface to deep structure: phrase structure, a mental model. Sentences have a hierarchical structure: sentences are made of phrases, phrases are made of words. Each phrase has its own word order &meaning. Phrasing can change meaning: susan saw a man eating shark, the phrase with (cid:498)man(cid:499) determines the meaning, restaurant or aquarium. Regular &irregular verbs: wash, washed, sink, sank. When guests come, i hide the dirty dishes by putting them in boxes or an empty sink. Bob and margaret were early so i quickly boxed the dishes and (sinked/sank) the glasses. People prefer regular verbs: sinked, washed, boxed.
