Psychology 2080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Closet, Shopping List, Mental Representation
Document Summary
Imagery: the mental representaion of simuli when those simuli are not physically present. We have images for objects, events, and seings. Usually we are referring to visual imagery (but we can also have images for the other senses: you can imagine sounds, tastes, smells. Botom-up processing emphasizes the basic components of an object (physical features), and top-down processing involves conceptualizaions of features: imagery is completely top-down (there are no basic components to use) You form an image in your mind using high-level processing. It can"t be connected to observable behaviour (it is in your head, not about what you actually use) therefore it was not a popular topic among behaviorists, but it has become more popular among cogniive psychologists. You can create images for things you have never seen before: eg. your mother on a skateboard. You can imagine things that don"t exist: eg. a person with three heads.
