• Hormones are absorbed transdermally through the skin
• Works in the same way as oral contraceptives

• Cost can range from 20-45 per package (one month supply, three patches)

Nuva Ring
• Soft and flexible hormonal contraceptive ring, appx 2 inches in diameter that is inserted
into the vagina
• Remains in the vagina for 3 weeks then removed and discarded, another ring is inserted
one week later.
• During the week without the ring, a woman will be expected to have her period
• Slowly releases a low dose of estrogen and progestin
• The hormones prevent ovulation and thickens the mucous to prevent the movement of
sperm
• Typical effectiveness 99% when used properly
• Requires a prescription
• 12$ at clinic and 30$ at pharmacy per ring
Emergency Contraception

o Ideally used within 24 hours of unprotected sex or broken condom and still very
effective up to 72 hours but effectiveness drops dramatically

o A pill that contains ulipristal acetate
o 95% effective is taken within 120 hours after unprotected sex
o effectiveness is decreased in individuals who have a BMI over 194lbs

• Depo Provera
o An intramuscular injection of progestin administered every 10-12 weeks
o Prevents ovulation
o Changes the uterine lining to prevent implantation of fertilized egg
