Document Summary

Rhoda unger said the meaning of sex" was unclear because it was overextended. Differences between sexes are not always/mostly biological. Rhoda unger suggested sex" = biological aspects of being female or male and gender" = nonbiological, culturally constructed aspects of being female or male. But we don"t know the amount of biological vs social factors in a behaviour. The meanings of biological and social factors are not clear. Sex binary: idea of sex as 2 opposite categories (male or female) Gender binary: idea of gender as 2 opposite categories (masculine or feminine) Intersexuality: the biological components of sex do not fit the typical male/female pattern. They are born with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (cais) Androgyny: high levels of both stereotypically male-typed and female-typed traits. Different cultures have more than two sexes and genders. Ex. two-spirit people live as both men and women. Ex. hijras live as neither men or women.
