Document Summary

The effects of psychological and physical pain can be a long process. Benefits to experiencing pain: survival value, learn to avoid injuries, set limits on activity and enforce inactivity and rest. Pain can be both the physiological and psychological. When cut, the nocioceptors respond to the pain by sending signals of tissue damage through the afferent neurons of the peripheral ns to the spinal cord to then the brain which produces a behaviour. Afferent peripheral fibres: transmit pain impulses: a-delta fibers, the afferent peripheral fibers that are associated with transmitting sharp, distinct pain, c-fibers, the afferent peripheral fibers that are associated with transmitting diffuse, dull, or aching pain. E. g. a soldier who has been shot does not recognize he has been shot and according to the gate control. Theory we know there are cognitive processes at play so given the situation our psychology will take over so one can escape/run away from the situation instead of getting shot again.
