Document Summary

Lecture topics: perceiving symptoms, deciding that we are ill (the role of illness representations), responding to treatments (the role of psychological reactance) Primary intervention prevent an illness before it begins. Now we are talking about secondary intervention taking steps to stop or reverse an illness after it develops. Secondary intervention involves biological interventions something has malfunctioned in the body and the medical doctor diagnoses you. However, secondary intervention doesn"t only involve biological factors -> also involves psychological and social factors. Psychological and social factors -> perceiving symptoms, responding to treatment. When the sensory receptors are stimulated, they will produce body sensations. This sensory receptor aspect is the first step of symptom perception. Yes -> if the sensations are pervasive and strong extreme bunger or fatigue or pain. No -> weaker sensations that are more ambiguous. Correlation between perceived heart rate, actual heart rate is small, same for blood pressure and body temperature -> we are not good at guessing this.
