Close relationships: those that are important, interdependent & long lasting. Attraction = the initial desire to form a close relationship. Social exclusion: kkk wont let me play - participants included or excluded in cyberball game. Told other players members of in-group, out-group or despised out-group (kkk) Addressed subsequent feelings of worth & belonging. Excluded - felt better when told the other 2 ppl are from your in-group. Excluded - even when made to feel excluded by a group of people we hate still hurts. Sadness, anxiety, depression, immune suppression & demotivation. Activates same areas of the brain (anterior cingulate) as when you feel pain. Reduced self esteem - bad for our health. The need to belong: innate; people relatively forge social connections. Satiation: ppl w suf cient relationships are less likely to seek new ones. Long term exclusion results in poor adjustment. Correlates: shyness, poor social skills, self-defeating attributional style (negative self-talk)
