Sadness, anxiety, depression, immune suppression & demotivation. Activates same areas of the brain (anterior cingulate) as when you feel pain. Reduced self esteem - bad for our health. The need to belong: innate; people relatively forge social connections. Satiation: ppl w suf cient relationships are less likely to seek new ones. Long term exclusion results in poor adjustment. Correlates: shyness, poor social skills, self-defeating attributional style (negative self-talk)
