Gender: state of being male/female: says nothing about the causes of behavior - just that there is a difference. Meta-analysis: combines statistical results of many studies asking the same question, yielding an estimate of the size and consistency of a variable"s effect: aka assess the overall trend in research. Janet hyde: gender similarity hypothesis: men and women are very similar and differences found are small, but left out important variables. *there is no gender differences in overall intelligence: verbal abilities: Start speaking earlier, larger vocabularies, better reading scores. Males just have a more positive attitude bc of socialization: spatial abilities. Ability to perceive and mentally manipulate shapes and figures. Males outperform females, but females can be training. Personality traits and social behavior: self-esteem. Females lower than males - but the difference is small: aggression. Behavior that is intended to hurt someone. Also indirect aggression: sexual attitudes and behavior. Men - more likely to engage in sexual activities/have more partners/casual sex/porn.
