Trait = specific and characteristic way someone approaches the world, doesn(cid:495)t their approach causes significant psychological distress to either the person or others, their traits may have become a disorder. Clinical state = expression of personality characteristic related to a specific circumstance, condition or period of time i. e. state dependent changes (exams) change in situations (ego-syntonic vs. ego-dystonic above) *critical to differentiate between a personality trait and personality disorder, disorders should never be diagnosed after brief observation, or without knowing the surrounding context. No clear boundary between disorders and traits best to way to think of them is pathological amplifications of underlying traits.
