Psychology 2030A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ct Scan, Occipital Lobe, Peripheral Nervous System
Document Summary
For abnormal psych it requires a scientific approach at all levels (bio, internal, interactions) Translational research is a scientific approach that focuses on communication between basic science and applied clinical research. Two main parts of the nervous system: central nervous system: brain and spinal cord, peripheral nervous system: all the other nervous systems. Translational research: looking at translational between the nervous systems. Dendrite- tree-like branches that receive messages from the neuron. Neurotransmitters- chemicals that transmit info to and from neurons. Neuron- nerve cells found throughout the body and brain that send and receive messages. Axon- tube-like structures that carry messages to the cells. The structure of the brain (figure 2. 1-2. 3 in textbook) Brain stem (controls fundamental functions e. g. breathing) Medulla, pons and cerebellum (regulate breathing, heart beat, and motor control, balance) Thalamus (brain"s relay station, directing nerve signals that carry sensory information to the cortex) Hypothalamus (homeostasis- looks @ blood pressure and tries to keep it normal)
