Fear, anxiety & panic: adaptive emotions ( ght- ight response) due to autonomic arousal increased hr, bp & gsr. Neurosis: 80s - cause presumed to be due to a disturbance in cns evolutionary basis of anxiety (genetic variability) Lt prevalence= 25% ~ 6x more likely to get (23-40%) w family history ~ 31% of all mental disorders have anxiety. Speci c phobia: fear / anxiety about something speci c (object/situation) >fear (panic) out of proportion to reality. Persistent; lasts 6+ months - phobic situations avoided/endured w distress clinically signi cant distress/impairment. Lt prevalence = 7-15% - typically begins in childhood / adolescence ~ 2:1 women:men. Types: animal, natural environment (water), blood-injection-injury (parasympathetic activation - bradycardia & hypotension), situation (airplanes), other; vomiting, clowns. Equi-potentiality premise: all neutral stimuli have = potential for becoming phobia.
