Classical conditioning may play a role in tolerance and by implication, physical dependence and withdrawal. If the conditioned stimulus is paired enough times with the unconditioned stimulus then the cs comes to elicit a response called a conditioned response. The degree to which the drug effect is reduced by the opposing cr should increase over the course of drug administration: characteristic of tolerance. A second group receive saline injections in the presence of cs cues alternating on a daily basis. The usual cs pre drug cues elicit the drug opposite cr predicted by the pavlovian conditioning model of tolerance. In order to get rid of a cr you have to present the cs and not follow it with the expected. Positive reinforcement involves situations in which the performance of some behavior results in experiencing of some desirable or rewarding outcome: most drug research focuses on positive reinforcement.
