Psychology 1100E Lecture 32: Psych 1100E, Lecture #32, Social Relations
Document Summary
We are intrinsically motivated to affiliate with others, and be socially accepted. The need to belong is a powerful, fundamental, and extremely pervasive motivation (baumeister & leary, 1995) There are two criteria to satisfy this need: We care about how people feel in this relationship. Doesn"t have to be a competition, but allows you to gauge how you"re doing compared to the people that you"re affiliated with. Motivate yourself to do better, or make yourself feel better about yourself. Our nearness (physically) to other people influences the likelihood of social interaction. The mere exposure effect suggests that the more we are exposed to a stimulus, the more we tend to like the stimulus (with some exceptions) The more you"re exposed to someone, the more likely you are to find. Overwhelming evidence for similarity on a number of psychological dimensions: attributes, attitudes, beliefs and values. University students went on a 30-minute date.
