Hunger and weight regulation, sexual motivation, achievement motivation. 3 notes about hunger: hunger is not directly linked to energy levels. Settling point theory similar idea, but body doesn"t return to set point, but settles on a new point: eat little more efficient metabolism stop losing weight, eat much less efficient metabolism stop gaining weight. Hunger is not just stomach contractions: people without stomach (ore with severed nerves) still feel hunger/satiety. Glucose: body"s (and especially brain"s) major source of immediately-useable fuel. Some used immediately, rest is stored: hypothalamus, liver monitor blood glucose levels. When low, liver converts sored molecules to glucose. Drop-rise pattern of blood glucose seems to be involved in initiating hunger. Peptides: here, hormones released by intestines, cck (cholecystokinin) Released by small intestine brain (satiety; fullness) Cck dose acts as appetite suppressant: ghrelin. Increases hunger; also increases thoughts/mental images of food (esp. of favourite meal) Highest levels before meals; increasing with pictures/smell. Leptin: hormone secreted by fat cells brain.
