Relieve symptoms by altering synaptic communication: anti-anxiety. Calming effect: lower excitability, heavily prescribed. Occasional prescription drug use can be beneficial. Chronic use is not recommended: should include some other therapy. Know associated drugs from textbook: anti-depressants. Extremely depressed patients become less sad, more optimistic. Know associated drugs from textbook (i. e. prozac: anti-mania. Prescribed for bipolar disorder: approximately 85% success rate. Eliminate manic phase and depression does not return. Seems effective but patients miss initial high of mania and may stop using the drug. Important to use a second therapy as well: anti-psychotic. 2 major dopamine pathways: brain stem too little dopamine = parkinson"s, cerebral cortex and frontal limbic. We want drug to target cerebral cortex and frontal limbic, but drug affects both: patient will develop a temporary movement disorder.
