Document Summary

Psychology 1000 lecture 36: social influence february 23, 2016. We prefer the best , but choose people with similar attraction level. Seems to hold in lab and real-world settings. Same-sex friends we also choose similar attractiveness. Mismatch can generate friction: leads to more break-ups and shorter relationships, and breaking up is hard to do. Norms: conventions, customs and laws that apply to group"s behaviour: e. g. Drive on right side of road, don"t stare, etc. Conformity: a change in attitude, behaviour or belief brought about by the real or imagined pressure from others: creates conflict because you want to do one thing, but there"s a pressure to do something else. Non-conformity can also branch into 2 sections: private acceptance, compliance know it"s wrong but go along with the group, independence do what you want, anti-conformity do opposite of what group wants.
