Document Summary
As we sleep brain puts together everything you"ve done recently and in dreams theres no restrictions so it weaves everything together. Neurons: semipermeable membrane, charge due to ions (-70 mv, action potential results from na+ and k+ exchange, neurons generate action potentials in all or none fashion. Synapse: action potential pushes v essicles toward gap, neurotransmitters diffuse across gap, lock and key receptors. Presynaptic to postsynaptic membrane: graded potentials, excitatory neurons depolarization epsp (more positive) Inhibitory neurons hyperpolarization ipsp (more negative) Neurotransmitters: acetycholine (ach, norepinephrine (ne, dopamine (da, serotonin (5-ht, gamma aminobutyric acid (gaba) Increase or decrease amount of transmitter: processes that terminate transmitter action, stimulates or block receptor sites. Cocaine: stimulates release of da, prevents re-uptake. Black widow venom: stimulates release of ach. Nicotine: stimulates receptor molecules, duplicating effects of ach. Excitatory neurons vs inhibitory neurons: different transmitters. Epsp"s & ipsp"s are additive across space and time: graded potentials. Constant inhibition effectively raises threshold: keeps the system from firing.
