Behaviours are viewed as being caused by internal factors (rather than environmental) Conscious: mental events that we are presently aware of. Preconscious: memories, thought, feelings, and images that we are unaware of at the moments but can be called into conscious awareness. Unconscious: impulses, desires are bubbling away not readily acceptable. Ex: "i want that right now" gratification or release. Driven to gratify its needs -> doesn"t care about consequences. Test reality to decide under what conditions the id can safely discharge its impulses and satisfy its needs. Superego: strives to control the impulses of the id. Ex: lets figure out a way to work together. Ex: good people don
