Document Summary
Chapter 1 psychology the science of behaviour. The scientific study of behaviour and the mind: actions, thoughts, feelings, reactions. Behaviour: actions and responses that we can directly observe. Mind: internal states and processes such as thoughts and feelings, that cannot be seen directly and that must be inferred from observable, measurable responses. 4 goals of psychology: describe hoe people and other animals behave, understand the cause of these behaviours, predict how people and animals will behave under certain conditions, control behaviour through knowledge. Roots of psychology: philosophy: the study of how we acquire knowledge, natural science: progress in understanding the body. The idea of applying the methods of sciences to the study of human behaviour leads to modern psychology. Nativism: knowledge is innate: focus of hereditary factors, nature. Empiricism: knowledge gained through observations and our sense: experiences, study only what could be observed, nurture. Aristotle: empiricism is born, knowledge through experience, environment and upbringing shape cognitive abilities.
