If connection is severed, the limbic system can fire emotional responses uninhibited by the frontal cortex, completely altering behaviour. Marijuana - thc binds to natural cannabinoid receptors (anandamide), stimulates release of dopamine by blocking gaba modulator (stops holding dopamine back) Alcohol - binds with receptors for ach, 5-ht and gaba (prolongs the opening of cl- channels), reducing activity in postsynaptic membrane. Cocaine - stimulate release of dopamine while preventing reuptake (keeps it there), people can get addicted very quickly since crack cocaine dumps all dopamine in at one time, results in a shortage. Psilocybin (agonist) - stimulates receptor molecules, duplicating effects of serotonin, can affect thermoregulation, altering sleep cycles.
