Document Summary
Circadian rhythms: daily cycles operating on a 25-hour clock, blood pressure, body temperature, chemical concentrations. Internal timing mechanism in hypothalamus: peak levels in late afternoon for physical tasks, suprachiasmatic nucleus, daylight stimulates scn, inhibiting production of melatonin in the pineal gland. Increase in melatonin = more tired: melanopsin (blue light) in photosensitive ganglion cells, darkness removes inhibition -> less tired, disturbances. Consciousness together -> irreducible: preconscious level, awareness of the relationship between self and external world, monitory (keeping track of self, control-planning. Integrated information (tononi, 2012: conscious experience is what happens when our (cid:498)mind(cid:499) puts available input, ex. )nformation not accessible but may (cid:498)leak(cid:499) out from time to time: freud, (cid:883)(cid:891)(cid:882)(cid:890): (cid:498)a happy person never fantasizes, only an unhappy one(cid:499, ex. )t was his father"s fault: fantasy allows unconsciousness to be expressed, most people daydream every 90 minutes about, however -> consciousness studies (dr. adrian owen) In unconscious vegetative patients, brain activity still occurs: tip-of-the-tongue, subconscious level.
