Agenda: the stress response, psychosomatic disorders, traumatic stress. Stress: a pattern of physiological, behavioural, emotional, and cognitive responses to real or imagined stimuli. Life changes i. e. death of a spouse (100), divorce, marital separation etc. If you think you have control over it, your fine. Certain type of people are going to get stressed more than the other. Anyone that you can talk to when stressed, it is good to talk to someone. Sense stressor: sympathetic nervous system sends signal to: Adrenal medulla dumps epinephrine into the blood stream: signal to hypothalamus. Anterior pituitary controls hormones, then the adrenal cortex (outside) they dump glucocorticoids (cortisol) go into the blood stream. Cortisol: effects similar to epinephrine, coverts protein to glucose, makes fats available for energy, almost every cell in body have receptor for glucocorticoids. So all the cells in the body can respond. Stress results in release of glucocorticoids, directly suppressing the action of white blood cells.
