Mood disorders: characterized by disturbance in mood (affect)rather than thought, high = mania, unipolar or major depression. In a mild form, maybe there is not a problem - you are in a mental high gear: but, unable to sit still. Jumps from unbounded elation to intense irritation: acute form of mania, endless talk, no inhibitions, grandiose plans, ceaseless torrent of activity. Sedation: consider: clifford beers / also charlie sheen. Success of tricyclics and monoamine oxidase (mao) inhibitors - can treat and help depression: psychogenic factors, biochemistry tells us how, but not why specific thought patterns occur, mood vs. cognition, psychodynamic perspective. Feelings of anger toward parent who abandoned you: anger directed inward resulting in guilt and self-loathing, any significant loss directed to you - friend, family, anything, causes unconscious kind of conflict, learning perspective.
