Document Summary
3 hierarchical divisions of the brain: the hindbrain, brain stem. Like a stalk at the end of the spinal cord: medulla. Extreme alcohol levels suppress medulla, leads to heart/respiratory failure. Also the point where motor and sensory nerve tracts cross to the opposite side. Left side of the brain = right side of body. Right side of the brain = left side of body. Bridge between the higher and lower levels of the brain. Also involved in respiration too (damage is often fatal) Involved in balance, coordination, fine motor movements, walking. Does not initiate movement, but helps to coordinate the timing of the muscles involved. Involved in certain types of learning and memory. Dan cer abellum: the midbrain, connects higher and lower parts of nervous system, contains both sensory and motor pathways. Relay center for visual and for auditory information. Collects visual, auditory nerve impulses; passes them on to the forebrain (thalamus) Motion in peripheral vision midbrain directs gaze.
