Document Summary
Nothing exists apart from child"s own perceptions and motor reactions. Look at organization of sensory and motor reactions. Piaget would say you need to come up with schemas. Coordination of activities is not present until 5 months (both hands will be 7 months) Pseudoimitation is present: child can imitate, but only if actions just produced. Importance of sensory feedback ie. stick out tongue. 18-24 month period: efficient imitation, representational thought, thinking the external world exists and it"s represented by some symbol. Object permanence even when sensory experience stops, you understand its still there you just can"t see it: preoperational stage (2-7 years) Rules not fully acquired until age 7. Inability to think in abstract rules eg. a 4 year old fails on conservation task such as volume (tall glass vs. 2 wide glass) or conservation numbers (checker example) Preoperational kids tend to attend to only one aspect of a stimulus eg. height, length.
