Document Summary

Play and aristotle believed schools + parents were responsible for teaching children; worried too much self-discipline would stifle initiative and individuality. Plato believed children has innate knowledge (about animals, emotions) and sensory experience triggered them, aristotle believed knowledge came from perceptual experience and that children"s minds were blank slates. John locke during the age of enlightenment claimed experiences molded infant into a unique individual; parents should instruct, reward, discipline children and relax their authority as children grew. In contrast, french philosopher jean-jacques rousseau believed children had innate sense of justice and morality that unfolded as child grew; believed parents should be responsive to child"s needs rather than discipline them. For much of recorded history children were considered grown ups as soon as they no longer needed constant care from adults (ages 5-7) and were sent to work in fields or factories. Push for reform came around 1800s to limit child labour and put them in school.
