Why do we need political news: democracy = free press = tv. Informs citizens = vital political issues: serve in public interest by keeping politicians accountable, political resource -> education and entertain. How has networks political news changed: pre 1980s, news wasn"t entertainment, shared news = shared understanding of what news was, nightly viewers were most frequent, tried to avoid conflict of interests, 1980s. It is not: at a regular time, available through more mediums, broad agreed political events, narrative debate or critique, can choose what type of bias we want to hear. Jamieson and cappella - news becomes safe haven: no contradictory news, news fitting our narratives of politics, reflect our bias, values. Jones: manufactured outrage: similar to social media - mis contextualized stories, partial facts, flame wars, opinion and unfounded claims become the story = alternative facts. Strategically leak info: seek free air time, trump dominating news.
