Review - intro to disciplinary power: the panopticon. Sovereignty is from through consent of those governed. 3 different versions - absolute (hobbes); legislative (locke); popular (rousseau) Non-judicial power focused on socializing individ; make them conform to interests + values of dominant ruling class. Target moulding + enclosing individ body + mind making every aspect visible + subject to observation + measurement (eg. criminal typologies, theories of deviance, therapeutics + correctional treatment) Foucault reminds us that 18th cent new practices etc are becoming a thing. Disciplinary power isnt external or cohersed but power lies in effect of power that is internalized. Power internalized by individ undergoing punishment (reading suggestion; kafka"s short story) Punishment becomes ensuring cost effectively practices (schools, hospitals, prisons) Ensures individs conform to social and expected roles (newly emerging capitalist economy) Gentler method of social control (prison birthed in. 19th cent justice became less about sovereign power but more about techniques of socially controlling of potential and social/moral attitudes.
