Begins by looking for the definition of just. Goal is to determine the well ordered society. Thrasymachus justice is in the interest/advantage of the: the ruling class has the ruling ideas, justice & laws are conventional & man made, no one overriding scheme. Though rulers not infallible, so if they can make mistakes than justice appears as if it can be the advantage of the weaker. Socrates is trying to establish that justice in itself is good & desirable, more than convention & that it is in our interest to live by it. Ruling is like a technical art, has external good for a well ordered society. Justice is not a list of do"s and don"ts much more than that & becomes a question about how all these things become a part. Plato sets out to create a new rule: based on reason, class based & stratified, reframing the hierarchical ideal, starts by finding the just soul.
