Good life = more pleasure than pain. Is not just a state - is a process in becoming self- developed. A cultivated mind and opportunities for self development - better if we have stimulating people around us and surroundings who are also looking to self-develop and beautiful things around us, eliminating poverty (ugly things) Modern civilized society is good for this - self development and equality of opportunity (coined by new liberals) Other societies only allow opportunities to high classes, only few people given opportunity to self development. Orwell - we should deals with concretes, not abstracts. Allows people to deal w/ problems themselves and for society to improve itself - reforms and improvement are only available in modern civilization (can get rid of all disease and poverty)
