Born in may 1469, well enough off to receive an education. Ambition was to get a position in government, which was typical of many middle class families. In 15th century florence, you needed connections and a liberal education (based on philosophy, literature and history) Humanities seen as essential for being a public of cial, also liked it when they published books to prove their knowledge. He had all this and was able to get a job as a diplomat. Witnessed the harsh world of politics in northern italy. Northern italy was volatile and wealthy, which made it worth ghting for. From this machiavelli becomes very interested in order and stability. Leans towards a republic as a preferred way of government. Florence government made a big mistake by aligning with france, but then spain and the papacy aligned and florence became very vulnerable. They attacked france, captured and subjected to their rule.
