Know nearest century when things were written. If people practice moderation it will produce harmony/stability. Aristocratic/meritocratic vs mixed government -> ideal for law state. Mixed government : balances and check each other. Plato afraid of commerce - encourages appetitive nature. Commercial society corrupts too easily - tempts appetitive. Does not want sea power to be important part of polity"s make up. Big navy gives too much power to poor citizens. Should be fertile enough to be self sufficient, independent -> should not be so fertile so it has huge export surplus.
