Philosophers do not need ela(cid:271)orate honors, it"s a distra(cid:272)tion. Plato"s image of us appetitive: we enjoy consuming and producing. We enjoy consuming - fever city, city of luxury. Need food shelter clothes of higher standard than philosophers or auxiliaries - more luxury. Too much stuff gets in the way of having good life. Too little stuff gets in the way of having good life. Too little resources - you cannot be a good craftsman or farmer without right amount resources. Too much ambition for honor and power gets in the way of good life. Appetitive like to own stuff: makes us happy. Not clear if spouses and children and shared. Appetitive get own property, family, spouses - help make them happy. Attachment to children can be good because you will be motivated to provide but can cause problems (may not want to give up kid to school to learn philosophy)
