Instinct of self-preservation and compassion: some comparison between individuals, but not a lot. We can talk about s. o. n as the pleasure of existence without awareness: long life with enough food, water, sex. No language or reasoning: lonely life since people aren"t sociable, no morality b/c humans just respond (we don"t make choices) Faculties are enhanced and new features come out. Still an instinct of self-preservation, but not at the point where we are egoistic: not practicing amour propre. We have compassion and more opportunities to exercise it. We compare ourselves to other human beings, and this is the start of trouble: people are equal and free. We improve our faculties to create language and reason: we are able to be moral, sociable, and perform long-term planning.
