We were created and given a sense of uneasiness and goals: made to work, strive, and as such we are given abilities, made to seek the laws of nature, given freedom capacity of choice. Summum bonum ultimate good: for locke, this is a good afterlife, reflecting a theist orthodoxy, despite being accused of being and atheist, believes in eternal life. Does not believe in hell, no eternal punishment only eternal reward -> being bad just ends existence: good life in his writings is tied to writing. Only way to save oneself is the sincere and steady purpose of a good life -> much more how you act than what you believe. Need each other, cannot be separate in the state of nature: propagate. Vanquish uneasiness and pain -> find pleasure (physical/moral) -> is happiness: develop world. Is not wasted, is given so the industrious can make use of it: develop property.
