Meets socrates, leading philosopher of the time. After his death, plato establishes a school of philosophy called the academy. Lived in athens but ravelled to north africa and egypt and was influenced by pythagoras. Plato also visited sicily, where he went to be a political consultant. Gave advice to this king of syracuse. No writings have survived from socrates, and because of this plato defines him in his writing as a mouth piece. Also wrote, the laws : put in place to see if he could have the republic . The feverish city, is the city that wants stuff, and thinks it is possible to make this city not catch a fever by putting in place safeguards. Plato"s writings are written in the context of athens" problems. The chief institution of athens is the polis. The cynics (diogenes) are countercultural and question, unquestioned conventions. Socrates is seen as more dangerous because he was more reasonable.
