Document Summary
Canada is made up a range of cleavages & identities in terms of culture, class, gender, etc. (as well as different fault lines) 13 provinces & territories (3 entities that aren"t provinces) N a range of minority & cultural groups (within the 35 million) We did not start with colonization, but our written history did. English & french make the canadian settler state. This is being driven by national advantage, expansion, trade, economic advantage, etc. Royal proclamation 1763: creates a colony of quebec, turns over french canada to english canada, first formal document governing what is to become canada, sets out treaty arrangements & understandings between first nations. Quebec act 1774: formal recognition of accommodation of french colonists, there would be wholesale immigration from england to the colonies, however most of the immigrants went to the usa instead of canada.
