People think of group of 7 when they think of canada. Tried to define canada by geographical landscapes and the arctic. North has powerful effect on domestic and international politics. For many canadians, the north has been frozen in time, there is nothing. North did not see major changes related to modernization until 1890s. Today, north is as modern as southern on. Geography of north had powerful effect on people and its development. Europeans came for exploratory reasons and hunting. Did not stay long due to cold. Discovery of minerals made people rush to region - klondike gold rush. Federal gov did not care much about north until gold rush. 1898: created yukon to establish law and order and to flex canadian sovereignty. 1879 national policy - began to develop north through policies and institutions to protect their interest. People went to north, extracted resources and shipped to south.
