Alerts us to the main issues of the day, week, month, year. It"s impossible to cover every news story, so media prioritize information. News sets the public agenda and has an impact on public opinion. Impact news focuses our attention and influences our perceptions of what is important. Front page, first story, social media news feed, what is trending. The soap (human interest, humans struggle together) (lisbet van zoonen, 2005) Audiences are being changed - based on the way these stories are structured, citizens turn into audience. Citizen discussing information in the public sphere consumer receiving information in the private sphere. Ex. reading social media in our private sphere rather than discussing face to face (jurgan habermas) New challenges with new forms of media. Media do not tell us what to think, but they tell us what to think about. The press and the media do not reflect reality; they filter and shape it.
