This was a style of music played in urban centers where african-americans hung out (black bars, brothels etc. ) Core instrument with ragtime music is the piano. Unlike the spirituals that are based on oral tradition, this is a style that is composed/written. Influenced by some of the spirituals and early jazz music. He was a middle class black man-career options were still limited. Career options for black men: preach, teach or manual labor, musicians, classical music halls segregated. His music became popular within the middle black class. It makes him wealthy playing in these huge concert halls. Scott joplin never gave up artistic control and he was able to get royalties (every time someone buys the entertainer)-this makes him a multimillionaire because he understands the business aspect-this doesn"t happen again until the 1960s.
