Human reason requires god"s help to discover the truth and promote human welfare. Reason is not effective without the aid of religious doctrine. It can"t on its own promote human happiness and well being. Catholic religion is the only religion of the state. Rejects authority of civil law in worldly matters. Error-pope will not reconcile himself and instead reassert the authority of the church. Rejected not just french revolution but industrial revolution: resisting development of cities and factories. Connected to the fact that we"re natural beings. Pre-industrial utopia: back to romanticised image of rural england. Its disappearing b/c of the liberal commercial capitalist societies. No longer capable of living proper human lives. We are spiritual creatures, value religious community: these are being destroyed by businessmen with ulterior motives, we are lacking all of the things we possessed before liberal social/political movements. Worried about commercial activity and reject pursuit of profit and material wealth.
