Fascism was the major political innovation of the 20th century, and the source of much of its pain. - Comes from the latin word fasces meaning a bundle of rods tied together with an axe (aka: social unity held together by a strong leader: strength through unity. It is a reactionary ideology: to be against reason and in favour of a certain kind of radical change (in this case they were against the enlightenment) To be fascist is to identify power in a single man (cult of leadership) Mass motivation through a monopolistic political party (one party state) Destruction of all intermediate organizations (ex: trade unions) The rule of law is replaced by arbitrary violence. Counter enlightenment ideas emphasize our differences, it is an anti-intellectual movement. Nationalism - romantic, irrationalist idea; fascists emphasize arousing the masses who should be encouraged/aroused into sacri cing themselves in the name of their nation.
